Summer Hill Natural Dairy Farm
Thomas Stack’s organic dairy farm in County Limerick uses Korean Natural Farming to improve soil, grass, herd health and farm resilience.
About
Summerhill Natural Dairy Farm is Thomas Stack’s organic dairy farm in County Limerick, where Korean Natural Farming is used to build a more resilient, low-input grazing system. After taking over the family farm in 2012, Thomas moved away from conventional methods and transitioned to organic farming, focusing on soil biology, grass quality, herd health and financial resilience. The farm uses natural inputs and fermentation-based techniques to support healthier cows, reduce dependence on bought-in inputs and demonstrate how dairy farming can work more closely with natural systems.
How are you using natural farming on your land or farm?
We are trained in natural farming to follow the nutrient cycle of the plant and animal. Our inputs are all made inside our farm gate. I have been spraying liquid imo for the passed 5 year’s on the soil. I make big piles of imo4 yearly and spread that as well. Once you have established the mycelium on you farm all you need to do is maintenance spray which is food for the microbes. I put all my inputs ( FPJ ACV LAB WCAP WCA and Fermented seawater into the water system for my animals , the right dose at the right time.
What changes or results have you noticed so far?
My brix is 14 to 15, my cows eat less and I am producing more grass. Nutrition density. My main costs are sugar diesel and electric. My immune system in my herd is getting better and better. It’s a closed loop system we the farmers only profited
What would you say to another farmer who is curious but unsure?
Seeing is believing and it definitely helps your pocket. I was a convectional farmer and very unsure. This type of farming will bring you closer to nature and when you work with it it pays you back ten fold.
